What is gold Vermeil (Pronounced vehr-may) and how does it compare to gold plated?
Gold-plated jewelry refers to jewelry that has gold plating at least 0.5 microns thick. It usually has a base material which is a less valuable material such as brass or copper at its core. The plating is usually very thin and the gold colour often wears very quickly.
Gold vermeil is superior to gold-plated jewelry and it must have sterling silver as its base material. Sterling silver is an alloy made of 92.5% pure silver and 7.5% other materials, and is a standard material used in high quality jewelry. The Sterling Silver must then be plated in gold that is at least 10k (10 karats). That means the gold is at least 41.7% gold content and finally, it must have a gold plating that is at least 2.5 microns thick. A micron is 1/1000th of a millimetre
In order to preserve the jewellery we recommend you avoid the use of cosmetics like perfume and shower gel in direct contact with the jewellery. Also avoid storage in a bathroom as the damp air can cause the product to tarnish.
