What is gold Vermeil (Pronounced vehr-may) and how does it compare to gold plated?

Gold-plated jewelry refers to jewelry that has gold plating at least 0.5 microns thick.  It usually has a base material which is a less valuable material such as brass or copper at its core. The plating is usually very thin and the gold colour often wears very quickly.

Gold vermeil is superior to gold-plated jewelry and it must have sterling silver as its base material. Sterling silver is an alloy made of 92.5% pure silver and 7.5% other materials, and is a standard material used in high quality jewelry.  The Sterling Silver must then be plated in gold that is at least 10k (10 karats). That means the gold is at least 41.7% gold content and finally, it must have a gold plating that is at least 2.5 microns thick. A micron is 1/1000th of a millimetre.

What is Gold-Filled?

Gold Filled is jewellery composed of a solid layer of gold (typically constituting at least 5% of the item's total weight) mechanically bonded to a base of either Sterling Silver or another base metal.

Most high quality gold-filled pieces have the same appearance as high carat gold, and gold-filled items, even with daily wear, can last 10 to 30 years. The layer of gold on gold-filled items is 5 to 10 times thicker than that produced by regular gold plating.

In order to preserve the jewellery we recommend you avoid the use of cosmetics like perfume and shower gel in direct contact with the jewellery. Also avoid storage in a bathroom as the damp air can cause the product to tarnish.
